Individualism

Updated: Jan 9

What is individualism? Individualism is being yourself! :) You are your own person, and you stand by your own values and beliefs. You don't allow others to interrupt what you believe to be right and good and thinking for yourself is also something only you can do. The things you like, dislike, opinions you have on different topics are all a part of your individuality. As a kid, you can't make all the decisions, but you have the ability to form your personality based on your influences. Do you like scary movies or funny? Would you prefer to read a book or watch something on tv? Which one would you choose Science or English? These are examples of part of your individual self.

Being your own individual is done by you and no one else. So, if someone has a different opinion than you on a certain topic it's alright because they are expressing their own opinion, just like you have your own as well. There's no need to dislike someone for it.

If someone ends up wearing the same thing as you to school, it's alright because you can still be your individual self. You may look similar but there will be something different about you. There's something different about all of us and that is our individuality. It's so fun to be different because if we were all robots, liking the same thing, doing the same thing as everyone else, not much would get done because everyone would be doing the same thing. If we all wanted to be doctors, there wouldn't be any astronauts, or teachers, or scientists, or sports players. We all have different interests and it's okay! Be you and like what you like because there is only one you! :) Check out more here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wht7XqYT7-M

Answer these questions to get to know yourself. If you can answer all of these that's great! There's always more to learn about ourselves at all stages. But this will be a great start!

  1. What is your favorite color?

  2. How do you help others?

  3. If you have a different opinion than someone else, do you still treat them with kindness?

  4. What do you find meaningful and important?

  5. Do you stick to what you believe are positive values even when others disagree?

  6. How do you spend your alone time? Reading, writing, playing an instrument?

  7. Do you continue to speak with kindness when others may not?

  8. How do you handle peer pressure? Do you continue being you?

  9. Would you rather be a chef or film director?

  10. If someone got mad at you because they disagreed with you on a subject, how would you handle it?

  11. What are some things you like or don't like that others may or may not? For example, I'm not a fan of white chocolate but I do prefer milk chocolate. :)

Hooray! Your answers are examples of being your own individual... and remember to always be you!

How do you show individualism? Here are some ways to do it.

Pick out your favorite genre of movie. What kind of movies do you like?

Form a positive opinion on homework. I'll give you a head start, it is an accomplishment! :)

Tell your parents or guardians what you like about each of them and no repeats! :)

Create your ideal business. How would you help people in the world?

Pick a subject in school you like the least and try your best at it.

Walk around with positive thoughts even when you are in a negative environment.

Decorate to express positivity such as a lunch box, locker, or backpack.

Pick places in the world you would love or like to travel. Learning more about the rest of the world broadens your mind even more to your likes and dislikes.

Stick to your positive beliefs and block out the negative talk from others.

Have your favorite dessert, only if you're allowed :) Whatever you choose, I'm sure you have good taste!
